sean + bekah:the wedding, part I
September 30, 2013 • life, love
Looks like "Love Story Mondays" will continue on in one form or another. You heard how we met, heard me rant about love stories gone awry, and for the next few weeks I will share our wedding in photo-dump form. Enjoy!

The Day Before/Rehearsal
While most of Sean's party were local or already in town, my girls were scattered about the country: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida, to be exact. On Friday, they all crept in throughout the day. Some, but sadly not all of them, began the day getting mani-pedis with me!
We then made our way to my mother-in-law's for lunch. Spouses and kids included. New friends were made!
And then it was off to the church to set up for the next day before rehearsing
major kudos to my friend Michelle who helped behind the scenes both days! |
And, then,of course, the rehearsal itself
...Followed by the rehearsal dinner. We made reservations weeks ahead of time, and the people at the restaurant recognized us but seemed shocked to see us, insisting we asked about a reservation, but never made one. Um, no. Things were incredibly slow, but they did go out and buy us cake!
Why yes, that is Sean's other woman! |
More to come next week! :)
touring chicago with a museum fanatic
September 28, 2013 • guest post
Hello everyone! I'm Betsy from over at Musings of a Museum Fanatic. Some of you might know this about me but if you're just meeting me for the first time I'm from the Chicago area and I LOVE my city! I thought I would take you through some of the lesser known gems of Chicago. You might have to trek a little bit to get to these places but it's definitely worth the hike for some real Second city sights, tastes and maybe even smells ; )
One of my all time favorite places in the Chicago area is Russell's BBQ. It's located in Elmwood Park just outside of the city. Unfortunately the easiest (and safest!) way to get there is driving. We have been going here since I was little, heck I think my dad (and various aunts and uncles) have been going here since he was a kid, the place has been open since 1930 after all. The best thing is their BBQ pork sandwhich. MMMM! I'm salivating just thinking about. When I say bbq pork you probably think of shredded meat doused in BBQ sauce well not here. At Russell's they slice their pork, and probably the beef and ham too but I've never gotten those, and you can add as much BBQ sauce as you like at the table.
My last hidden gem of Chicago is the Frango Mint Cafe in Macy's on State St. Can you tell I like to eat? This place is one of my favorites when we're in the Loop. Most people tend to go to the Walnut Room while they're at Macy's but I prefer the Frango Cafe. It's only open for lunch so be sure to take that into account. They have a yummy half sandwich, cup of soup with chips and a pickle meal for a great price (last time I was there it was $7.95) but the best part of the meal is that it comes with either a piece of Frango Mint Cheesecake or Frango Mint Chocolate Ice Cream Pie! The ice cream pie is AMAZING! If you don't make it for lunch at the Frango the Walnut serves the ice cream pie as well. MMMMM!
First up on my lesser known gem tour of course would have to be a museum. I can't give you a favorites list of anything Chicago without one! Number one would have to be the Chicago History Museum. 2.5 miles north of the Loop and right at the southern edge of Lincoln Park (the actual park and the neighborhood) this is a perfect place to head to get away from the craziness that can be the Loop during tourist season. This museum is a great place to learn about Chicago past and present. I actually just went this past weekend with my good friend Lauren. I won't tell you too much cause I'm going to have a nice big post for you next week on my blog. Needless to say it's worth the 156 bus ride north. The Chicago History Museum has everything from the 1893 Columbian Exposition (a favorite of yours truly) to Al Capone to current temporary exhibits like the fashion of Ebony Magazine (a Chicago based gem!). Oh in case you're wondering that's me as a Chicago style hot dog at the Chicago History Museum.
Bad Apple is a yummy place I found earlier this year when my friend Saige was in town. It's just a bit south of Montrose and Lincoln, so there are definitely public transportation options to getting there. They are known for being a gourmet burger joint but what really sets them apart is the gourmet frie upgrades. Definitely try the fries with the truffle or garlic seasoning ... but beware of the garlic YOWZA! Not for date nights, unless the person really likes you already, like the hubby and I cause I know he would most likely go for those fries and I would let him cause I'm an awesome wife like that. I actually didn't end up even having a burger that night I had the Hickory Hillbilly (pulled pork) and it was delicious. I did try a bit of my friends Edmund Fig-Gerald (Edmund Fitzgerald porter, fig & bacon relish, goat cheese, smoked onion) and it was so good. I would do it without the onions though (yech!). If you're going on a weekend I would head there early because it was packed but they are open super late so maybe your chances would be better then.
One of my favorite activities that I really haven't done in forever is Whirly Ball! It's bumper cars, lacrosse and basketball smushed into one big awesome time. I mean seriously how incredibly amazing does that sounds? There are actually three locations in the Chicagoland area, one by my parents, one by where I live now (which I didn't know before yesssss!) and one in the city in Lincoln Park. The one in Chicago is right at Fullerton/Damen/Elston so there are a bunch of buses to get there. You could probably walk from the L if you really wanted to but I would take a bus. The whole point is to get the whiffle ball into the basket but most of the time I never got the ball so I was more of a defender. What I can I say I really like bumper cars. It's great when you've got a big group of people who know each other, you always feel a little bad ramming into someone you don't know ... or maybe you don't : )
Hope you enjoyed some of my favorite Chicago hidden gems!
why i'm jealous of holly
September 26, 2013 • guest post
Remember when I finally admitted to having a long term bucket list? I only listed a few things then...primarily because I couldn't remember them all, and if I did, well...y'all likely wouldn't want to read a list so long.
When Holly submitted her guest post to me, I remembered something - I'm quite jealous that she's currently experiencing awesomeness that is on my list - my mental list anyway. When I have the funds, I have every intention of going this route as well.

I'm Holly and I blog over at Back Home Again, mostly about my family and our attempts to live sustainably. This summer we, along with another family, joined a CSA. It's something I have wanted to do for awhile now and I'm so excited we got to finally do it this year.
A CSA, or Community Shared Agriculture, is a farm dividing up all its produce among a group of shareholders who share with the farmer the risks and benefits of farming. Each week we get a share of the fruits and vegetables grown at the farm. We've received all sorts of goodies, some of my favorites are broccoli, spinach, strawberries, Sungold tomatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, zucchini, kohlrabi, green beans and blackberries. We've received many more veggies than this too.
Our CSA lasts from mid-May through early-November - almost six months! I absolutely love it. Having fresh veggies every week that are locally grown AND Certified Naturally Grown is so awesome. We have more than made up for the cost of our share. Another thing I love about it is that my son gets to experience first hand where his food comes from, something that I think is definitely lacking in this country - and he loves it! Once my daughter is old enough, she will come along too. Localharvest.org is a great website to find local CSA's. They're expensive, but if you're able to afford it or can split the cost with another family, I highly recommend joining a CSA near you.

super lazy eats: beer bread
September 25, 2013 • recipe
It was first through my relationship with Sean that I heard of beer bread, and only through this relationship that I tried it. I've never cared for beer, so the thought of baking it into bread? No, thanks. Still, I baked him a loaf. And I gave it a try... yum!
I never would have thought to share this recipe, but Sean and I found ourselves at a pumpkin beer tasting . We grabbed a six pack—some of it went to share at the tasting, and some of it went into the beer bread to be shared among the guests.
Somewhere during the evening, this happened:
At this point, Sean interjected, assuring her that the beer doesn't really matter (although we do enjoy experimenting, Sean's mom has made the stuff with beers he hates and he still likes the bread!). At this point though, I realized something. Two somethings:
1. There are people who think beer bread comes in a box like cake mix.
2. There are people who think making beer bread is difficult.

Guest: Did you make this?
Me: Yeah.
Guest: It's really good.
Me: Thanks. I wasn't sure how it would taste with pumpkin beer.
Guest: It's good. I have some beer bread mix at home, and I should make it, but I'm scared I'll ruin it with the wrong beer.

Top: Pumpkin IPA Bottom: Pale Ale. Different looks, delicious taste. Use whatever beer you like! |
While #1 is technically true, you are getting ripped off if you are buying beer bread mix. Beer bread contains three ingredients, and there's a good chance at least two of them are in your home at any given time. That should help you see already that #2 is false, and thus, I am posting this super easy, super lazy recipe to save you a few bucks....and so your house can smell of fresh baked bread!

fighting for your love story
September 23, 2013 • faith, love
I felt it a few weeks ago when I finished reading 40 Days of Dating
I felt it again last week when I watched the season finale of Breaking Pointe
Frustration. Pure and simple frustration. My mind screamed so loud, I wasn't sure if it was really my mind or if it was actually me. The reason for the frustration is the same every time;the above scenarios have a serious flaw in common. I'm finally going to empty my mind and talk about the frustration.
In all fairness, the media doesn't show us everything. In all fairness, I've been married only three years. But we've been together nearly nine and the "D" word isn't in our vocabulary. God forbid it ever makes an appearance, I hope I remember the words I am recording now, because I feel this is the reason so many relationships are failing.
People are giving up. They aren't trying. They aren't fighting. They're just quitting. It's sad and infuriating all at once.
I, like many citizens of blog land, eagerly awaited those last few 40 Days of Dating posts that Tim and Jessica withheld from us for a few weeks. Some days, it seemed like they could never work out. Other days, their relationship looked promising.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Of course, we know that by day 39, things looked pretty bleak. What should have been a romantic trip to the "most magical place on earth" went very wrong. A fight was picked and nasty words that can't be taken back were said...all fueled by a forgotten jacket.
It wasn't the fight that upset me. Yes, it was awful, and honestly, I wouldn't want to be with a guy who said things like what Tim said to Jessica that day. They were unfair, unwarranted, unnecessary.
What upset me was the lack of trying, mainly on Tim's part. In the beginning, we see the two share their goals and their drawbacks. They typecast themselves as the commitment phobe and the serial monogamist.
But wasn't the goal of the experiment to investigate why and to work on those things? I feel like throughout the blog, we see Jessica taking her counseling to heart and applying it. Instead of being offended by Tim's actions, she thinks about why. When something she does upsets him, she takes the criticism and tries something different the next time. A perfect example was the very fight I just referred to. Tim complains that Jessica doesn't defend herself, so she does. And you know what? He reacts and chooses not to like it anyway. Really, dude?
In the meantime, I feel like Tim has his good moments, but for the most part he's whining. All throughout the project: "I feel pressured!" He says so all. the. time! We see maximum whining and minimal trying. Then on day 40, he has the nerve to say "I know now that I’m in love with her. I love her, yet I know there’s nothing else I can do."
Really? Really? Love involves actions and trying and things you could have done if you didn't put yourself on the defensive this whole experiment. Agh! Both parties admitted feelings for the other; Imagine how different things could have been if both parties actually tried. The best moments in chick flicks are the ones where one party fights for the other. That element was notably absent here.
I don't know how many people watch(ed) Breaking Pointe. It's a reality ballet mini-series on the CW. I found the first series on hulu and was thrilled when a second season was announced.
Of course, what would reality tv be if it were all dancing and no drama? There was drama aplenty this season, some from a younger, immature dancer, and more from two married dancers we met the previous season, principals Chris and Christiana.
Right from the beginning, Christiana admits there is trouble in paradise. We don't know specifics, and we see very minimal interaction between the two all season since she has decided the two shouldn't talk at work. Many times, we see Chris try to approach her only to receive a cold shoulder.
Again, in all fairness, tv can hide or show what it wants to. What it does show is a vague interview almost every episode saying the same things: we're going through hard times, we shouldn't talk at work, I need to get on my own to figure things out and get my life back on track.
It's sad. We don't know specifics, and again, we don't see interaction whether it be conversation or argument. We see some attempts from Chris to reach out before he eventually gives up.
The season is short, focusing on one winter ballet. I was hoping that with the stress of the performance removed, they could work together. Take a time out? Fine. But see a counselor, talk it out, something!
Instead, we see a sad Christiana withdrawing more and more, and an exhausted Chris in the last few episodes acknowledging that he doesn't like things, but he "has to let her go."
I hate that phrase. What does that even mean? She's your wife! Marriage works when people take the harder route of holding on, not letting go! Fight. for. it.
But. alas, he lets her walk away. And when the series finale aired, the end "where are they now?" text reveals that the two have since divorced.
My heart sank and screamed at the same time for both of these couples. A love story that could have so easily been preserved with effort. But our society doesn't seem to believe in effort anymore.
My love story is young. Only three years of marriage (though many more of dating). Things haven't been so hard on us. Life has been hard, but marriage has not. We haven't been forced to try. Yet.
One day, we likely will. I pray that I will be wise enough to look back to what I'm feeling now and remember my own words. Try. Do something. Fight for your love story. Isn't it worth it?

marriage...
September 21, 2013 • love
...is what brings us together, today.
Ok, that's not really what I came here to say. But it does involve marriage.
It's no secret that marriages tragically end every day. I love my husband and I don't want to be a part of that statistic.
I've actually been working on a post on that very subject that will go live sometime next week. It will likely step on some toes, but it's been heavy on my heart for awhile now and I feel the need to speak up.
In the meantime, Tyson from Uplifting Love reached out to me about a marriage-related challenge he and his wife are hosting.
His timing couldn't be more perfect. Yes, there is a male in our midst in blog land! I love his content as his goal is the same as mine - to preserve his marriage at all times!
If you are married, I encourage you to go on over to his post here and check out the details. This is a fun (and hopefully easy) challenge involving things we should be doing anyway! Plus, there are prizes!
Just be warned, I don't like to lose!

In the midst of all my Cara Box exchanges, I was paired up with a girl named Aleshea (pronounced just like Alicia!) whom I'd never heard of. (Actually, Out of all my match ups, I only ever knew one of the girls. Nicely done, Kaitlyn!)
I stalked over to Aleshea's blog to see what kind of person I'd be sending too. Then I got confused. I was reading about myself, only it wasn't my normal writing. But just about everything on her "about me" page was actually about me. Scary. Needless to say, we became fast friends, and I'm thrilled to have her both on my sidebar and sharing this yummy-looking veggie goodness (with cheese!) today!
Read on and enjoy!
When Bekah emailed me to guest post I was like what in le heck am I gonna talk about. Y'all I emailed her and ignorantly asked her if she ate cheese. I wanted to send her a recipe but didn't know with her being vegetarian an all. She emailed back and goes, "I'm not Vegan and I'm eating a piece of cheese right now." Whelp, that was that and there was no shame in my game.
I've said it many times before but the ability to make a casserole is top of the list for every Southern Woman. If you can't whip up a casserole from the things rottin' around in your fridge/pantry than we have a serious problem. And today I haven't had enough sweet tea to help you along. Instead I'll just leave you with this yum yum.

Hey girl hey. Wait, does that sounds as stupid on Bekah’s blog as it does on the many blog emails I send? Anyways, blogging out loud again. Let’s just move right along with this guest post. I got’s to keep y’all interested and not enough attention span to do so. I fail at the whole elevator pitch, so if y’all really wanna know about le blog than I guess you’ll have to click my baby face on Bekah’s sidebar. Y’all like that? I’m on someone’s sidebar and it didn’t cost me a dern thing. Take that Capitalism. Ohh, I feel like I’ve already lost some of y’all. But, seriously, I’m such an open stalker that y’all have probably already seen my nosy butt around here. Did I mention I say y’all a lot. But, it’s ok cause I’m from Texas. And you are never allowed to "Bless My Heart", take away my sweet tea or tell me hell no unless I say it's ok. Bam! So I guess that is my elevator pitch.
But it's ok cause I'm a lifestyle blogger.
Stay with me and let’s keep trucking along. Here’s where I tell you that I like to post recipes, but before I do so, I usually post some awkwardly lit photo and tell some random story But it's ok cause I'm a lifestyle blogger.

One word - wedding!
We had a great time with family as Sean's cousin, Nicole tied the knot! It's always great to see everyone and have some fun.
I decided to enjoy the event and company versus take a ton of pictures, so there aren't too many. Here's a few of us, some details, and the gorgeous venue!
sean + bekah: outtakes/deleted scenes
September 16, 2013 • love story
I've shared how we met, how we got together, and how we made it official. I love all the feedback I've gotten during this series. Thank you so much!
There were little stories and memories here and there that I wanted to incorporate into our story, but they just didn't flow. Still, they make me smile, and when talking to family, they remember many of the same things.
So here, in no particular order, are some "outtakes" for you to enjoy!

So here, in no particular order, are some "outtakes" for you to enjoy!
- On one of our first phone conversations, Sean's cousins were visiting. They knew he was talking to a girl and decided it was the perfect time to bring up his high school girlfriend (they dated 3+ years). Suddenly, in the background, I hear "she dumped you!" ooooh.
One of those cousins may or may not be pictured... |
- Speaking of exes...Sean's ex once got a little intoxicated and left a message (we can't remember if it was text or voicemail) saying "she had dibs" if he and I didn't work out. Whoops. It must have been embarrassing when she had to sober-call him after to apologize.
- Remember "the 'f' word"? Shortly after making it official, I met even more family...including those two cousins. The younger of the two called Sean to get my name to make me a placecard (awww) for a family dinner. Of course, the spelling of my name isn't all that common. They made an acronym then to remember it. To this day, they use it when someone else gets it wrong. I will forever be known as Boy Elephant Kangaroo Apple Human!
- I've traveled more in my eight overall years with Sean than in the twenty leading up to that. Growing up, our family vacation was a weekend visiting my dad's siblings & kids in western MD. Since being with Sean, I've been to Disney twice, Myrtle Beach twice, NYC (for the first time ever!), Maine, NJ, PA (though I had been before), Boston, Ohio, West VA, all over VA, and Jamaica! Love it!
Fact: I'm not a Pooh fan, but Sean's mom LOVES the Crystal Palace! |
- When Sean proposed, I actually said "no" first! He had told my mom he would cut my wrist off if I said no. I had to of course test him on that. He didn't find it so funny. Obviously I said yes right after!
- The night we got engaged, my phone rang at 3 am. A classmate who ended up on my team for a project wanted "to talk." I'd been a little weirded out by him before, but this took the cake. I was clearly dead asleep and he was begging me not to hang up and saying strange things. I hung up. Way to distract me from showing off my bling in the morning...instead I was talking to my professor about how this kid had just taken creepy to the next level and trying to figure out what to do.

If you didn't know, I took a new approach to sponsorship of re•solve when Passionfruit began charging a subscription fee: I am now giving all of my spots away!
I couldn't be happier with my first lineup of ladies; some are familiar faces while others are brand new to me.
Brianna is in the latter group and I am thrilled to have met her. Like her, I know all about the joys of long distance dating! I wish her (and her man) the best, and hope that you come to like her too once you read her lovely introduction below!

Hello everyone! My name is Brianna and I'm from Endlessly Beloved. I am more than honored to do this guest post for Bekah; her blog has been an inspiration to me!
So here's a little about me! I'm a student at the University of Arizona. I'm studying psychology right now, but I honestly have no clue what I want to do with that.
I'm obsessed with country music (mainly Luke Bryan) and I love all things pink and sparkly! I also love love.
This is my handsome man, Dj, and me. :)
He's pretty much the star of my blog! He's my favorite thing to talk about. We were friends when we were little and reconnected almost a year ago. He's my world!
He's in the Air Force and we're doing the long distance thing while I'm still in school. It's really tough being away from him, but we manage it pretty well. I just got to visit him in Europe though, and it was amazing!I looove to brag about him, so I apologize in advance haha :)
I also love crafting and cooking. So you'll find tons of crafts and recipes on my blog!
Like these painted and distressed mason jars!
....and these long distance mugs.
...and homemade tacos! Yum :)
I hope you'll stop by and come learn more about me and my crazy life!
With endless love,
Brianna
you are my sunshine...

Chains, chains, chains. I'm really not a fan, but what can I say? It always feels good to know that someone thought of you!
I haven't heard of this award, but it was so sweet of Chelsee to nominate me.

I haven't heard of this award, but it was so sweet of Chelsee to nominate me.
The award is circulated to chosen bloggers to let them know that their posts brighten your day.
The Rules:
1. Include award logo in a post or on your blog. (Chelsee's post had a different logo, but a quick google search yielded the above pic most often)
2. Link to the person who nominated you [Chelsee].
3. Answer 10 questions about yourself.
4. Nominate 10 bloggers to receive the award. Link your nominees to the post and comment on their blogs letting them know they’ve been nominated.
1) If you could be in any TV show, what character would you play?
I don't watch a whole lot of TV - maybe Erin from The Office? Gotta love my fellow redheads, plus she cracks me up!

2)What is the number one thing that you could change from your past?
Nothing. Something else in my life could have changed for the better, but I likely wouldn't have (met) Sean if things were different.
3) What is your best piece of blogging advice?
The nerd in me says - For the love of God, grammar and spelling! The re•solvist in me says - Be yourself!
4) Are you pro or anti vampires?
Really? Can I be indifferent?
5) Have you attended a Blogging Conference and if so which one?
No, but I would so love to! Even a network for me would be nice! Both "Southern Blog Society" and "Northeast Bloggers Network" exclude Maryland. I'm all alone! *sob*
No Maryland! via |
No MD here either :( via |
6) Who are you top 3 favorite blogs to read?
7) Cats, Dogs or Both?
DOGS!!!
8) What is your biggest pet peeve?
Oh, so many. Bad spelling/grammar, stupid questions, entitled people....
9) What is your current favorite song or movie?
"Roar" by Katy Perry has definitely bought real estate in my head!
10) How excited are you that I nominated you?
That was so sweet! Definitely gave me some sunshine :)
I nominate:
Mandy, Aleshea, Mariel, Karla, Veronica, Holly, Natalie, Nadine, Karla (a different Karla!), & Janna.
