None Like Him Book Review & Giveaway

I love to read, but I'm always a little nervous when I agree to review a Christian book. Any Christian media, really. Some are great while others are...not so great, and there seems to be no way of knowing what you're going to get.

Aside from a pretty cover, I wasn't sure what to expect when I agreed to review (and give away!) a copy of Jen Wilkin's None Like Him: 10 Ways God Is Different from Us (and Why That's a Good Thing) . Thankfully, I knew I was meant to read this book before I'd even finished the first chapter.

A little back story: we briefly searched for churches in Baltimore last year and didn't find anything. We stayed with our home church, which we love, but were still bummed about not having connections with the community or during the week via Bible studies, etc. Recently, an opportunity arose to help a pastor plant a church locally, which enabled us to stay with our home church most Sundays while doing the latter two options here in the city.

Back to the book: I read chapter 1 on a Sunday after attending the plant church's monthly service. It was the same subject matter. I read chapter 2 a few days later and it was taken from the same passages we'd been going over in our weekly small group.  Clearly God was making sure I got the message :)

I enjoyed the conversational style and easy to follow anecdotes and Wilkin uses to get the points across. A favorite one involved a celebrity who was known as a bad kisser by his high school peers—doesn't sound like your typical preachy read, does it?

Ultimately, the point is simple: God is God and we are not...and that's OK. We'll never be God, we'll never completely understand God, but we can still get to know Him and still bring glory to Him.

I'm not one to spoil a good read, so I'll stop right there and tell you to grab yourself a copy to enjoy. Start by entering below to win one for free!

  1. I enjoy a good book, and especially enjoy them when they are free or at a discount (I think it's the Scottish in me that makes me frugal!) Until recently, I had taken a hiatus from reading books, and now I am reading again and loving it.

  2. I love to read, too. Actual books are my fave, not just something on a kindle. They're especially good when they can engage you like this right from the get-go.
